Reading the section 'Mailbox Formats' in the mutt manual should help.
If you have Evolution using, for example, mbox type mailboxes I would
expect mutt to be able to read them.

Not to my knowledge.  Try Google with "vfolder" and "mutt".  Looks like
the Debian package mairix may help.
