mount version older than kernel

I get the following error in syslog when I try to mount a remote HP-UX
filesystem on my Debian woody box:

May 1 09:05:34 topaz kernel: nfs_get_root: getattr error = 5
May 1 09:05:34 topaz kernel: nfs_read_super: get root inode failed
May 1 09:05:34 topaz kernel: nfs warning: mount version older than kernel
May 1 09:05:34 topaz kernel: nfs_get_root: getattr error = 5
May 1 09:05:34 topaz kernel: nfs_read_super: get root inode failed

I am using mount 2.11n-4 and kernel 2.4.18-bf2.4. According to the
kernel source Changes file, this version of mount is new enough. I see
the BTS (#78735) has this listed as a potato bug, but says it is fixed
in woody. Do I really need a new mount? What version? Do I need to
recompile my current mount with the 2.4.18 kernel header files? Other?

John
