For Gnome 2.2 you will need following packages:
Apt-get install
Xserver-xfree86
Gnome-core (read this link: http://people.debian.org/~walters/gnome2.html)
Menu
Xbase-clients
Xfontsbase
Xfonts-100dpi
Xfonts-75dpi
Xfonts-terminus
Xdm
Xfonts-intl-european
Menu
If you use Debian do not go with the newest packages, go with the newest
Debian packages.
