sounds like X is not linked to the right file
try:
ls -l /etc/X11/X
and
ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/X
on my system:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Jan 28 19:20 /etc/X11/X ->
/usr/bin/X11/XFree86
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root root 7416 Apr 16 2002 /usr/X11R6/bin/X

not sure, I have a S3 Savage MX(?) on my thinkpad T20 and it works
great in the woody version of Xfree86.
