You should have ext3 or auto for the filesystem type specified in your
/etc/fstab for ext3 partitions.  This could be a result of having ext2
listed there and trying to mount an unclean ext3 partition.  You can
only mount ext3 partitions as ext2 if they were cleanly unmounted.

If you have no way of editing /etc/fstab right now, I'm not entirely
certain how you'd get around it.
