Can Kmail be used outside of KDE?

In my never ending quest for a new mail program I installed kmail from
testing.  It starts but when I try to fetch mail it generates:

kio (Scheduler): ERROR: ERROR 3: couldn't create slave : Unable to create
io-slave:
klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'pop3'.

My guess is I'm missing something that was not listed as a dependency in
the kmail package.

I do not have KDE installed (of course) -- I run XFree86 4.2.1 and IceWM.
