Once in a while (3-5 times a month, at most), doing a 'pon' will just
hang--the modem shows 'CS' then 'TD', but that's it.

What do your logs show?

Only thing relevant I could find is this (/var/log/messages):

Similar (somewhat) stuff in /var/log/syslog.x.gz files

Don't know if there are other logs I could be having created--syslog.conf is still with default settings.

I'm still a bit green around the gills.

Running pppconfig, and creating a new 'provider' (or just deleting an old
one, and re-creating it) rectifies the situation--

That's strange. All pppconfig does is edit the ppp files. Please post
/etc/ppp/peers/provider and /etc/chatscripts/provider as they look while
pppd is hung. Munge passwords.

I'll get back (hopefully not too soon).

Thanks for the thoughts.
