After a lot of searching for a solution to my problem I reinstalled everything from scratch. One possible cause to my problems might be that some of the necessary kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter modules was not loaded. I can now browse the internet and send mail, but I can still not use the machine as a gateway. Thanks to all who contributed. Regards Ole
