As I use a custom-made kernel, I don't use ltmodem .deb files, but I must say that tarballs are really fine, I never had any problem (I compile them since my 2.2 kernels). IMHO you could try them. If you still want .deb files, you should choose the one matching exactly the kernel flavour you have installed.
