This is unrelated to having other mixers installed.  This means that
either the sound modules are not installed, or the device files are not
present.  You said alsa is compiled into your kernel, so the first
probably is not the problem.  To fix the second problem, try running the
snddevices script that's found in /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/examples
(assuming you have alsa-base installed), or it should be found somewhere
in the alsa sources.
