Intel 82546 Gigabit e1000 ethernet in Debian

Hello list,
Pleased to make your acquaintance.

I have a brand new Dual Xeon (with HT) server and I'm trying to get the onboard Intel 82546 e1000 NIC going. I'm having a few problems and was wondering if anyone here has got this NIC to work under Debian?

I downloaded the source for the NIC module off Intel's developer website, and managed to get it to compile (on a separate PC under kernel 2.2.20, the new server has 2.2.20 off the CDROM installed on it) but when I tried to load it on the server I got a heap of undefined symbols :( I guess that I got the undef.symbols because e1000 support is not available in 2.2.20? I got the source for 2.4.18 and 2.4.19, but they don't seem to have support for this NIC either.

I am not incredibly experienced with kernel building, or compiling modules, or, in fact, Linux as a whole :) so please bear with me.

Please help!

TIA,
