Check in /var/log/lpr.log and lp-* files as well for more
information.  Also, take a look in /var/log/syslog to see if there
might be device issues.

Another thought...check /etc/hosts to make sure you have a valid
localhost entry and check /sbin/ifconfig to make sure the "lo"
interface is setup properly.
