I followed the install steps same as you. The make install command put
two files in /usr/lib/xmms/Input--libavixmms.la and libavixmms.so Both
have been installed with permissions of 755 while the dpkg installed
plugins have 644.

Also, my goal was for listening to streams, but if that is
non-functional I'll try Avifile as described at
