I'm not so clear about your fancy graphical greeter.

okidz@okidz:~$ dpkg -l  | grep gdm
ii  gdm            2.2.4.3-1      GNOME Display Manager
Mine has a greeter that can display jpg files.

Since you are sticking into stable, I think compiling things is a bit out
of question.
