Yeap, got that installed.

Got up this morning, started the machine with the intention of tracking
down the problem ... and everything is working fine again !  I have no
idea what went wrong before and have just been trying to reproduce it
for the last hour to no avail.

Conclution: Sorry for the waste of time. Seems it was just my machine
having a bad day - or one of those once in a million years bugs.
