OpenOffice 1.x/StarOffice 6.x is _MUCH_ better at dealing with Word docs
than SO 5.x.
One thing you should be sure to do is install the Microsoft TrueType
fonts; they release a set of them for free, including the ones most
often used in documents and powerpoint presentations like Arial and
WebDings. Viewing and creating Word-compatible docs is a lot simpler
with these fonts available.
Recently Microsoft disabled download, but the license allows
redistribution and there are other sites where it is available; there's
one on SourceForge.
There's a Debian package, msttcorefonts, which you can install to get
them set up but you'll have to download them yourself first, since it
attempts to go to the Microsoft site to download them.
