You'll need to load the 8139too module before it will work.  You can do
this either by running "modprobe 8139too" as root or adding a line to
/etc/modules (the later will cause the system to load it on every boot). 
As for sound, you probably don't have any modules loaded for your sound
card.  Keyboard beeps and what not are an entirely different thing from CD
and other sound.
