I found some instructions that worked out ok (i upgraded debian 3 stable
with kernel 2.2.20-i386 to 2.4.18-i686 using internet download):
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html
You don't even need to run make-kpkg.
I think my networking has stopped. You'll need to beware...
