.Xresources not loaded

I switched from GNOME with gdm and sawfish to use only blackbox on my
old computer at home. I needed to reduce memory usage. I now do the
login in console and start X with the startx command. However the
.Xresources file is not loaded and I have to manually do:

   xrdb load .Xresources 

is this file supposed to get loaded by default or must I add this line
to .xinitrc?
