Slow console on serial port

Hi,

I'm attempting to install Debian using the console on the serial port.

Booting proceeds normally until the following messages are seen:

--- Begin messages ---

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
Freeing unused kernel memory: 228k init 24k pmac 8k prep
serial console detected. Disabling virtual terminals.
init started: BusyBox v0.60.3-pre (2002.01.19-22:40+0000) multi-call
binary

--- End messages ---

When the "serial console detected" message appears, the console output
slows to a crawl: the Debian installation screen takes about half an hour
to appear (literally).

I've also posted this on debian-powerpc, since the machine is an IBM
RS/6000, but I suspect the solution may well not be powerpc-specific.

Any ideas?

Best regards,
