I'm sorry. I've never used a 2.4.x kernel with potato.
I only know that it is the official Debian workaround to use those kernels 
with potato and that it has FAQ status. ;-)

The 5 should be from the package version kernel-source-2.4.18 (2.4.18-5).
It is configured when building the package and will be increased step by 
step.

I'm posting this to the debian-user-list, too. Please answer to the list.
