Do you have more than 1GB of physical memory?  If for example you have
4GB of memory then even after getting the standard Debian SMP kernels
you will only be able to access 1GB.  You need CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G=y
configured to get to use all of your memory if you have a lot of it.

This is the only reason I recompile my smp kernels.  It had not been
mentioned yet and so I provide this as a heads up.  And perhaps
someone will educate me that one of the stock debian kernels provides
SMP with 4GB of memory capability stock and I can just use it without
recompiling.  :-)
