don't feel bad. I've been using linux and unix since 1996 and
it wasn't until yesterday that I found out that / was an actual
directory(I thought it was a directory only in the virtual sense,
not in the physical sense).

I executed some commands which due to a symlink screwed up permissions
on all the files on the entire system, spent an hour fixing it as best
I could and another hour to try to figure out why I still couldn't
login unless I was a member of group root. called a developer into my
office to help, after a few minutes he said 'do an ls -ld /' I did
and sure enough everyone other then root had no read/execute access
for the / directory.

luckily I work with a dozen unix developers :)
