I had the same problem (in Danish, not Swedish), and this solves it for
me:
export LC_CTYPE=da_DK
It also has the nice effect of allowing the Danish characters to be
entered at the bash command line.
[Off-hand, I don't know what value to use for LC_CTYPE for Swedish...]
