yes, i tried startx 
and also tried that i launch X directly
(/usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 vt8)
and then launch fvwm either directly
or from one xterm running on this server
no success

i did not play with the fontserver
as i was already getting fed up and decided 
to download and compile fvwm from source
funny enough the compiled version runs absolutely 
fine 

i start to suspect that my debian may  somehow be broken
