A 'simple' lilo

Is there an equivalent to lilo that doesnt provide all the extra features such 
as multiple boot kernels/OSs etc. I just need something that will boot a 
single kernel image. Even with lilo booting as quick as possible it still 
seems to take a few seconds (i reboot often as this is a laptop with no 
suspend to disk). Something that stops my screen dropping out of framebuffer 
mode just to switch back for the lpp would be great. I looked on google but 
couldnt find anything, so i hope someone here has some ideas.
