Question about CUPS LPD support (towards Mac OS X).

Hi,

After many recommendations for CUPS in response to a question I asked
recently I went ahead and installed it on my main workstation
("server"). It's working great. I have enabled lpd support to allow
printing from some other clients I have.

One of the is a woody box with the traditional lpd packages
installed. Printing from there to the CUPS server is just fine, so I'm
fairly certain I got the LPD interfaces started up and all.

Another lpd client is a Macintosh G4 runing OS X (v10.1 to be
precise). From this machine all print attempts result in raw
postscript on the printer. After fooling around a while I noticed that
the control file (the C* files in the cups spool directory) always
gets the wrong mime type for files from the Mac. It says
application/vnd.cups-raw instead of application/postscript.

So I'm thinking: is there something in the lpd protocol that sets mime
types? How would the tradition lpr command (using LPD) in Woody work
out to the right mime type, but not the Mac (which is a BSD box at
heart). Interestingly enough, when the server ran lpd instead of CUPS,
I had the same problem with the Mac, so I'm thinking it's the Mac that
is the problem, but I'd like to be sure.....

Clues will be much appreciated.

Cheers!
Shyamal
