RootUser_Xwindows_ConsoleScrewed

Upon initial boot-up and login with a NON-ROOT user everthing works OK.
Ctrl-ALT-F* gives me console windows and F7 the X.

If I login to X as root, Ctrl-ALT-F* give me unusable screens with various
vertical stripes.  Logging in again as NON-ROOT user all of the tty's
continue with the vertical stripes.  I must reboot and never login to X as
root to continue to get the proper tty response.

I was thinking about trashing all the .* files that appear related to X in
root.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
