kernel building problem on woody

Hi,

I need your help!!
After having built a new kernel and configured lilo, I get the following
message upon startup:

modproble: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-3
VFS: Cannort open root device "306" or 03.06
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:06

Previously, I was using the kernel from the package
kernel-image-2.4.18-686 (2.4.18-5). To build my custom kernel, I used
kernel-source-2.4.18 (2.4.18-5) with the configuration file of my
working kernel /boot/config-2.4.18-686. I used make-dpkg :

make-kpkg clean
make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image
dpkg -i kernel-image....

my /etc/lilo.conf is

boot=/dev/hda
root=/dev/hda6
compact
lba32
install=/boot/boot.b
map=/boot/map
vga=5
prompt
delay=50
timeout=50
menu-title="GNU/Linux Debian 3.0 (Woody) on sandy"

default=WinXP

image=/vmlinuz.2.4.18-686
        root=/dev/hda6
        initrd=/initrd.img.2.4.18-686
        append="noapic"
        label=L2418-686-GOOD

image=/vmlinuz-2.4.18
        root=/dev/hda6
        initrd=/initrd.img-2.4.18
        append="noapic"
        label=L2418-NEW

other=/dev/hda1
        label=WinXP

Any idea?

Thankx
