Would they be able to tell the difference between a "real" Word XP
file and a file generated by OpenOffice.org and saved in "Word
97/2000/XP" format?

I often use Wine with Word 2000, but the version currently in unstable
will probably not work. Try debs from
http://people.debian.org/~andreas/build/ The 20020815 build works for
me (20020812 did not).
