You're right, even with MANPATH (exported) set to

/home/lefevre/man:/usr/local/man:/usr/share/man:/usr/X11R6/man:/usr/local/j2sdk1.3.1/man

I get:

$ man -aw java
/usr/local/j2sdk1.3.1/man/man1/java.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/kaffe.1.gz /var/cache/man/cat1/kaffe.1.gz

But I should have got '/usr/share/man/man1/kaffe.1.gz' before
'/usr/local/j2sdk1.3.1/man/man1/java.1.gz'.

FYI, I currently have the symlinks:
/usr/share/man/man1/java.1.gz -> /etc/alternatives/java.1.gz
/etc/alternatives/java.1.gz -> /usr/share/man/man1/kaffe.1.gz

Do you still need the output of 'man -adw java'?
