Software Raid - no network connection for new kernel

Dear List I need some help

I am reading the manual for a software raid
http://www.james.rcpt.to/programs/debian/raid1/

 one of the problems I could not solve is, that when I reboot the Kernel for
creating the Raid partitions - the new kernel does not find my network cards
(2.4.18-686-smp).

Any ideas what I could do?
