What I mean is this. If you install Woody from the i386 Binary CDROMS and follow as many default options as possible, you end up with a login controlled by, for example, gdm. I am assuming that most users will install this way. You can then run either xterm within X, or use a virtual terminal (ctrl + F1) to do all the "make" stuff.

This is what I did:
1. Install from CDROM (choosing X and desktop in tasksel) and set gdm as default. 2. Before re-booting (or when logged into a terminal session as root) edit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf to allow root user to login. If you don't do this, you will not be able to run any X progams as root (including "make xconfig").

I just thought that using "make menuconfig" would avoid this possible problem.
