You've filed a bug against the offending package, yes?  (See
http://bugs.debian.org/, and possibly install the 'reportbug'
package.)

'dpkg --remove packagename' (or --purge), but that's not going to help
you more at this point.

"No, but."  Probably the best thing to do is to modify the package's
prerm script to work, and include a patch with your bug report.  You
don't want to go around blindly deleting things there.
