Problems with cdparanoia

I can't get cdparanoia to rip any tracks. I have both my DVD and CD-RW under
scsi emulation. Here's the output from 'cdrecord -scanbus':

coffee (steve)$ cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord 1.10 (i686-pc-linux-gnu)
Linux sg driver version: 3.1.22
Using libscg version 'schily-0.5'
scsibus0:
	0,0,0 0) 'SAMSUNG ' 'DVD-ROM SD-616T ' 'F302' Removable CD-ROM
	0,1,0 1) 'CDWriter' 'IDE128 ' '1.04' Removable CD-ROM
	0,2,0 2) *
	0,3,0 3) *
	0,4,0 4) *
	0,5,0 5) *
	0,6,0 6) *
	0,7,0 7) *
coffee (steve)$

So, the dvd player is on /dev/sr0. I am able to mount data disks on that
drive just fine, so everything there is in working order.

The problem comes up when I try to use cdparanoia to rip tracks. Here's what
I get:

cdparanoia III release 9.8 (March 23, 2001)
(C) 2001 Monty <monty@xiph.org> and Xiphophorus

Report bugs to paranoia@xiph.org
http://www.xiph.org/paranoia/

Checking /dev/sr0 for cdrom...
Testing /dev/sr0 for cooked ioctl() interface
/dev/scd0 is not a cooked ioctl CDROM.
	Testing /dev/sr0 for SCSI interface
No generic SCSI device found to match CDROM device /dev/scd0
coffee (rips)$

So what does this mean "not a cooked ioctl CDROM" and how do I fix it?

Thanks.
