Well, I'm a software tester, although all my previous jobs were
programming.  Unfortunately, they don't use Debian here, just that other
distro named after a coloured head covering.

My wife also does Unix stuff, on Solaris (at least until her contract
ends), but so far I haven't got her onto Debian at home (still need to
set up a lot of stuff I've already got working under that other OS).
But the majority of her study was in Physics, so I guess you could
almost say she has a non IT background.

Another friend of mine who I know runs Debian is a programmer too.

So, anecdotally, yes, most Debian users are IT people :)
