When you startup from the default startup disk, then there too is the
possibility to pass options to the kernel; try

   linux init=/bin/sh

this should give you a very basic system, only root (/) mounted (read-only).
Remount root (mount -oremount,rw /) and start looking where gdm get's
started.

If your boot disk for some reason doesn't allow this than you can always
boot from the install cd and instead of doing the install again switch
to the second console, mount your root disk and start the gdm hunt.

So the thing to do now is to find a way to boot into your system with
nothing but a simple shell. One of the above should work. If yoy need
help to eleminate gdm, please ask again after you managed to get into
your system. (oh, and if the above two methods don't work, let us now
so we can help to find yet another way to get in:)

But not for long we hope.
