xawtv sound comes through the line-in usually (or aux if you have an
internal connection from the tv card to sound card).

When playing wav files, it goes through the PCM (DSP) mixer component.
You may have the volume of that set to zero, or it is muted.

Under alsa for the emu10k1 there is also a "Wave" mixer component. By
default this is at 100%, but if that were zero, it would also stop you
hearing any sounds. I use alsamixer to change these mixer levels.

I dont know what you can use under OSS/Free (linux 2.4 default sound
drivers) to modify these mixer levels.
