it's a hassle but this is how i did it:
download the en_GB dictionary from here:
http://whiteboard.openoffice.org/lingucomponent/download_dictionary.html
the instructions are misleading.
i unzipped the en_GB in /wordbook
then backed up
OpenOffice.org1.0.1/share/dict/ooo
in case i fscked up.
then, edit the /ooo/dictionary.lst file and replace en_US with en_GB
equivalent.
cp all the newly unzipped /wordbook/* files into /ooo/
ls -l /ooo/
and you should see that the en_GB files have different permissions
to the en_US.
chmod 755 en-GB*
and you should have this:
-rw-r--r-- 1 joss joss 1750 Aug 13 22:51
README_en_GB.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 joss joss 627 Aug 13 22:52
dictionary.lst
-rwxr-xr-x 1 joss joss 5651 Aug 13 22:51 en_GB.aff
-rwxr-xr-x 1 joss joss 668491 Aug 13 22:51 en_GB.dic

joss@linux:~/OpenOffice.org1.0.1/share/dict/ooo$
now follow #3 on the web page:
# Start up OpenOffice.org. and go to:
Tools->Options->LanguageSettings->WritingAids
Hit "Edit" and use the pull down menu to select your
locale and then make sure to check the MySpell
SpellChecker for that locale.
should do it.
