Some of the above are not working.

1) Make sure you have loaded the correct module for your soundcard. Do 
this using the tool 'modconf'. 'lsmod' shows currently loaded modules.
Look for the module i810_audio, it's the one you should use.

2) Try all different output plugins in XMMS. These can chosen under the 
Options->Preferences, Audio I/O Plugins tab. CTRL+P should bring you there.

3) See if there are any other programs using (locking) your /dev/dsp. 
This is not very usual if you just started up your computer, but check 
all running processes by issuing 'ps axu'.
