3ware 6800 works good. once i got rid of my IBM drives they
have been running like champs. I have 3 6800 8-port cards
with 6 drives each, and 1 6800 4-port with 2 drives..I hear
that they are not available new anymore(out of production) so
you'll have to find them used.

also a quick search reveals:
http://www.linux-ide.org/chipsets.html

I'm not sure if that top raid card is supported out of the box
in woody.. the 3ware is supported in potato though so it should
work fine for the woody installer.

you sure its CMD640? i seem to recall for some reason the CMD640
is really old(486 era?). maybe its a different "CMD640" ..when
i search for CMD640 i see hits for freebsd 2.x, and linux posts
in 1996 ..

the special cards may not be supported in the special kernels
(e.g. your using the -xfs kernel). your best off finding what
driver the card needs and checking the kernel's config to see
if it is there ..

I haven't personaly used the PDC20268 but I believe I have
many 20267 cards(about 8) all work perfectly..under 2.2.19
with the ide patch. i don't use 2.4 except with suse.

the only true hardware ide raid i've used in any system is
the 3ware 6800.. it was a snap to do a basic setup. had tons
of problems along the way, most were due to reasons other then
the 3ware controller though.(such as about 8 disk failures
from disks connected to my raid controllers). Haven't had
any real problems since i switched to maxtor disks and
PC Power & Cooling TurboCool 450watt power supplies.

and as mentioned above, i only use 2.2.19, so i don't know
how well(or if) 3ware 6800 is supported in woody, since
woody's default kernel is 2.2.20, looking at the kernel
config for that kernel image shows that it is supported:
