squid and mysql not starting on boot

Hello,

I've jsut installed Mysql and squid and both show that they start on
boot up but when I log in they are no longer working. I can manually
start them with /etc/inid.d/ and all is OK but why are these two
services not running from boot up? Other services like apache and
postgresql run fine from boot.

where would I go for info on how this works in Debian?

thanks very much

joss
