This is curious - did you install from the same .deb as I did?  In
/usr/share/cups/model I have

deskjet.ppd   epson24.ppd   okidat24.ppd  stcolor2.ppd
deskjet2.ppd  epson9.ppd    okidata9.ppd  stphoto.ppd
dymo.ppd      laserjet.ppd  stcolor.ppd   stphoto2.ppd

and, as you see, there's no HP subdirectory.  I think I'm probably using
deskjet2.ppd because I was offered the "new" DeskJet drivers through the
web admin.  Do you have the above in addition to the HP (and possibly
others) subdirectory?

The version I have installed is 1.1.14-3.  Perhaps you also installed the
cupsomatic package - apparently it provides ">900 printer ppd's."  Knowing
that CUPS was already HP-aware, I didn't install that package - but you
may find, I suppose, a better driver in there.  (My 895Cse has never
produced such nice output, by the way.)
