Weird... now the http interface does work with it installed - I just installed it (and restarted cups). Yet the last time I had a problem like the one described all I did was remove cupsys-client and the interface worked. The only other difference between then and now is that that was the first time I attempted to access the server through http. Is it possible that you first need to configure the server (add a printer) before installing the client package?
Other than that - what useful clients? I can't say that I've noticed any difference from having it installed yet.
