That's what I did.  I moved the uncompressed archive to /usr/local and
created symlinks of /usr/local/jdk and /usr/local/jre to their appropriate
locations (jdk to the main directory and jre to the jre subdirectory
within) so future versions could be dropped in without having to rework
everything.

You will need to install "libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1" to get the Sun JDK to
work.
