Best method to install JDK1.4?

What is the best method to install the Sun JDK 1.4.0?  I have not been able
to find a prepared package (no surprise because of the license) and I have
not been able to find a way to get it to work from apt.  Should I just
download from Sun and install?  /usr/local preferred?
