Thoughts on helping people unsubscribe correctly
Debian Users,
After seeing several people having trouble unsubscribing, I have come to
realise that a significant number of the problems are from people who
are subscribed to the digest, rather than the direct list. I myself am
subscribed to the digest and I think (one of) the problems is that the
only unsubscribe info that is seen in the digest is for removal from the
direct list and not the digest list. Additionally, these instructions
are only seen if they are quoted in a post, not at the end of every post
as they are on the direct list.
I would suggest that a similar pointer needs to be in the contents
section of the digest, probably right at the top. This might eliminate a
substantial number of people who are unable to correctly unsubscribe.
Maybe some sort of automated response from the listmaster might also be
helpful in calming people down, if a reasonably fast human response is
not going to be possible. It is certainly aggravating to be having
problems and getting no response from the resource that is meant to be
the catch all / last resort... Of course it may not be required if we
can get people unsubscribed correctly first time.
Barney.
