well without it you DO get an error message, but the kernel install
completes and the reboot brings with it disaster.

if I'd paid more attention to the error message I'd have been OK, but as it
doesn't seem to install cleanly without aptutils i was wondering if there
was an itnellectual argument for having it as a dependency.

I'm not blaming anyone here, what happenned was my fault.
