This sounds like the MBR isn't being read - did you have lilo install in
/dev/hda or hda1?  You probably want it in hda - it seems to work
better.

lspci will give you the details of how the kernel reads your hardware.
You'll then have to make sure you have the drivers for these in your
kernel config, either built-in or as modules.  If you don't know how to
roll your own kernels, either look into kernel-package, which makes life
easy, or google for the kernel-HOWTO - it's a good doc which walks you
through rolling a kernel.

As for an XF86Config, try linux-laptop.net - they have a lot of helpful
stuff for setting up laptops.  Most of it's RH based, but there are some
debian-specific ones as well.
