Cable Modem, Road Runner, dhcp, kernel packet missing

I think I found the source of trouble for my no-connection to the internet:
In the file syslog there is the following entry repeated several times:

Aug 8 13:40:11 debian dhclient-2.2.x: gre0: unknown hardware address type
778
Aug 8 13:40:12 debian dhclient-2.2.x: gre0: unknown hardware address type
778
Aug 8 13:40:12 debian dhclient-2.2.x: socket: Protocol not available - make
sure CONFIG_PACKET and CONFIG_FILTER are defined in your kernel
configuration!
Aug 8 13:40:12 debian dhclient-2.2.x: exiting.
Aug 8 13:43:41 debian dhclient-2.2.x: gre0: unknown hardware address type
778
Aug 8 13:43:42 debian dhclient-2.2.x: gre0: unknown hardware address type
778
Aug 8 13:43:42 debian dhclient-2.2.x: socket: Protocol not available - make
sure CONFIG_PACKET and CONFIG_FILTER are defined in your kernel
configuration!

Well, how do i configure these two in the kernel? Are they part of a module?
Thanks.
Running: woody 3.0, kernel 2.4.18
